Our Bariatric Procedures

We offer the following bariatric weight loss procedures in addition to various weight loss revision surgeries.

Gastric Sleeve (Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy)

The gastric sleeve, also known as vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), is a type of bariatric surgery where the bariatric surgeon removes a portion of the stomach, leaving a sleeve-shaped stomach that is about 25% of its original size. Gastric sleeve surgery achieves weight loss by reducing the amount of food that can be consumed as well as the amount of “hunger” hormones produced by the stomach.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RNY)

The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery (RNY) is a type of weight loss surgery where the bariatric surgeon divides the stomach and connects it to the small intestine. It differs from gastric sleeve surgery in that weight loss is achieved not just by limiting the size of the stomach, but by allowing food to bypass a portion of the stomach and part of the small intestine, resulting in reduced intake of calories.

Mini-Gastric Bypass (MGB)

A mini gastric bypass surgery (MGB) is a simpler, shorter and less invasive version of the traditional Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. During a mini gastric bypass surgery, the bariatric surgeon follows a similar process to a regular Roux-en-y gastric bypass surgery with the main difference being a shorter length of connection to the intestines (Roux limb), the ability to perform the procedure laparoscopically (less invasive) and shorter surgical time.

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) is a minimally invasive non-surgical weight loss procedure that involves using an endoscope inserted through the mouth to reduce the size of the stomach without surgery. The reduction in stomach volume is attained by folding and suturing the stomach instead of removing a portion of it.

SADI-S

The SADI-S is a surgery for weight loss that combines the components of the gastric sleeve surgery and duodenal switch surgery, and can provide greater weight loss and metabolic improvements. It can be a good choice for individuals with higher BMIs and who have had previous bariatric procedures but failed to maintain their weight loss goals.

FAQ

What is Weight Loss Surgery?

Weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, refers to a range of procedures designed to help individuals lose weight and improve their overall health. Two of the most common types of weight loss surgeries include gastric sleeve and gastric bypass. These surgeries work by reducing the size of the stomach, altering the digestive process, or a combination of both.

Each procedure has its own benefits and risks, and the choice of surgery depends on factors such as your overall health, body mass index (BMI), and personal goals. It’s crucial to consult with a qualified bariatric surgeon to determine the most suitable option for your specific circumstances.

To qualify for weight loss surgery, certain criteria must be met. Generally, you would have a BMI that is in the unhealthy range, and possibly health-related conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea. See if you pre-qualify by using our BMI calculator online.

Before undergoing weight loss surgery, you’ll undergo thorough medical evaluations and pre-surgical assessments. These evaluations help determine your overall health and assess any risks. Our bariatric surgeon and team will guide you through the qualification process and provide the necessary support and information.

Here are the basic steps you will take if you decide to have weight loss surgery. Please remember you are assigned a coordinator and have multiple people along the way guiding you. This is just a basic breakdown of the steps for your big-picture understanding of what to expect:

  1. Pre-qualify by filling out the BMI calculator.
  2. That sends your info to our team.
  3. You are assigned a coordinator to help guide you through the process who  sends you a digital health intake form to complete.
  4. You fill out the digital intake form.
  5. The form is reviewed by our surgeons.
  6. If our surgeons approve you for surgery, you select an available date.
  7. Shortly before your surgery date, you must begin a pre-operative diet.
  8. You fly to San Diego for you surgery (you can bring a travel companion)
  9. You visit the hotel and hospital.
  10. You have your surgery.
  11. You are monitored post-surgery.
  12. You fly home.
  13. You follow a recommended post-operative diet.
  14. Share your transformation photos in the bariatric support group.

You don’t have to worry about making this decision on your own. Our team will help you match the right surgery for your goals. Simply complete the health intake form we send you and you can discuss your options with our team.
